As I closed my eyes, the whole world went quiet and
blurry. Everything was plain fuzzy and static. Quiet. Then,
I opened my eyes to find myself lying on my bed, as if nothing had
happened. I looked at my room's tickling wall clock. It was only 9
p.m. Everything was still. What had I been doing just minutes
before?
I raised one arm upwards to find my finger
glowing with a strange silver sparkle on its top end. As I
stared at it with awe, I decided to point at the ceiling and write my
name as if everything above me was a giant expandable
blackboard. How weird it was that the sparkle did indeed leave its swift trace
where it had moved, and even more bizarre when its trace began to
lightly disappear along with the pass of time: it
being simultaneously so full of momentum and nostalgia, like a silent
screaming voice with no hearer or speech purpose whatsoever.
The midnight darkness was slowly beginning to completely
engulf my room as I simply entered the task of drawing random shapes
and people's faces on top of my now faded name, merely for the
sake of watching them shine upon my face
with reverence and astonishment.
Lost in time and space. My spirit
being enclosed in a nonexistent vacuum, its endurance yet lovely. How beautiful
it was right now that the air was exclusively filling
my lungs and giving life to my soul with inner peacefulness.
Amidst the perfect moment I was having, a deafening
alarm began
to increasingly ring from afar outside.
What was it or where did it
come from? Only destiny and time knew.
A moment later, a low coarse voice
began to calmly speak: “You have 50 seconds to go for the
key at the backyard to be able to escape.”
I was startled. Escape from
what? Which key was it talking about? What was its secret true
meaning? Was it all, by all means, merely just a nearby
neighbor’s prank?
Suddenly, the voice faded and everything was calm again. I shivered
and mightily wished that it was all an unreal,
evil, and nightmarish joke or mind trick. I pinched my skin just
in case everything was a dream. It was a total flunk. I didn't go
absolutely anywhere nor did I wake up either. I took a deep breath
of utter relief.
Moments later, I started to hear a distant sound approaching
just as the alarm had done, but instead it was more like a wolf’s howl than
anything. I knew there weren’t any wolfs where I lived
at. Moreover, everything was only made up of buildings
and concrete. How weird. Was I going crazy?
As each millisecond passed, its noise
began to merely become louder and louder.
Without a doubt and also quite alarmed too, I abruptly stood up from my
bed and headed to my living room downstairs in a flash. My head
circled and looked up at the ceiling with open ears, searching for
answers as of to the strange recent happenings from the past
minutes.
As a matter of
fact, I then decided to go outside.
When I opened and stepped through the entrance door, my jaw dropped in unbelievable fear. As I stood by my porch, the whole world was raining silver and orange comets everywhere. There were lakes evaporating into space and faraway trees burning with rage. A freezing cold wind chilled through my skin, filling me with weakness and numbness. My hair got all ruffled.
How stupid had I been not to bring at least a
sweater outside! I was simply wearing a pink pajama shirt and was
eventually dead cold.
A second later, a thudding sound snapped
behind me. I turned around to see that the entrance door had
just been turned into a huge unbreakable metallic
material, merely impossible to ever open
with any bare hands.
Afterwards, I heard a swoosh. As I turned my head back in slow
motion to see where it had come from, a fire path appeared in front of my only
possible escape: the street. It had multiple ways dividing east and
westwards, including an endless path just going ahead of me
into apparently nowhere. Like a stressful
and complex labyrinth.
Once more, the same voice I had heard a while ago started to count backwards from 30. What was happening? I covered my ears. The noises played apocalyptic sounds and were all the same becoming louder and louder as time passed by. I began to run through the slim fire path searching for my backyard, paradoxically thinking of it as the only way to end this chaos.
Odds weren't in my favor though, as I
couldn't find my backyard for everything was all now evidently covered in a
curtain of darkness and fire.
“20 seconds,” said the voice.
I was running and turning
toward the westwards fire path, jumping and dodging all kinds of soil
bumps and bushes. My heartbeat was increasing dramatically. Was it
all a matrix game?
Where did I have to go? I couldn’t
focus on which direction my backyard was. In fact, I was
literally losing track of where I even was, besides also getting so hot
from the excessive fire temperature surrounding all around me.
"15 seconds," said again the voice.
I was growing weaker. I was tired of
running with no apparent direction. I was slowly becoming dizzier and dizzier.
Some strange force was taking control of my body, and I didn't want to
surrender to it.
Forget the key! I told myself with a
sense of urge. I panicked and decided to go back to the entrance door, in hope
that it had turned back to its normal state all by itself for my pity's sake.
"10 seconds,” said the voice
roughly.
I turned backwards and ran without
doubting through the path I had just gone by. It didn’t take me long to
arrive at the entrance door and literally bump into it because of my brake
lack. It was still, unfortunately, made of metal.
I thrust my fists into it with a crazy
hope of being able to crack or break it open just like that. Obviously, all my
attempts were imminent fails.
I turned my head behind me just to witness strange covered black flying
shapes slowly approaching me from the straightforward endless path of nowhere.
I screamed and turned back to bump and
kick the door again with all my might.
My fists were turning red and
swollen from the laborious task and beginning to thrive in
pain.
I was imminently doomed.
"5 seconds,” coarsed the voice.
As I ceased kicking the door, I turned
around to see a huge black ghost with two white eyes and a fire made up
body fly directly at me at light speed.
Instinctively, I crouched on my
knees and covered my head with both arms.
An increasing sound growled:
“Uuuuuhhhhhhh!” towards me. And then flash!
A fire curtain engulfed and soaked me
all inside it.
All was dark.

A loud beep began to endlessly make a high pitched note.
From outside a hospital window, you
could see two nurses running crazily all around inside a white room. One of
them approached a lying girl's body in a bed and immediately put her hand on
its chest. A tear emerged from her left eye and instantaneously fell on top of
the girl's bed sheet. Almost simultaneously, she shook her head and slowly
turned to her work companion to coldly whisper what it all meant:
“How mighty the power of a fever is to actually be able to kill a poor
innocent girl. Yet alone, to be capable of driving someone mad, disarraying its
memory, and engulfing its brain into another altogether different, thus far
incomprehensible, dimension."

ReplyDeleteFirstly I thought it's a prosaic poetry but after giving it a second reading I realised that it was a short story..I really liked the way you build up suspense till the end.. Keep up the good work.. :)
