He got tired of the same old boring environment. Everyone down
in every village in the land of Worgenous had that nonliving attitude inside themselves. Such
mediocrity everywhere he’d go.
The villagers only had the typical customs of
doing their everyday chores. Children were too lazy to play anywhere but near
the rivers. There was usually a quiet and still atmosphere within everything regarding
its surroundings: trees, plants, bushes, the rivers’ currents, etc., never
moving except for a given force only applied on purpose.
Whenever he tried to convince someone to go
out and find adventures with him or to just simply feel a little bit of
excitement for once, nobody ever dared to move for anything at all. He always
felt that there was a missing urge for a change. How could anyone not feel the
same whatsoever?
That was when he had decided to find adventure
on his own. Make the change that he so desired by himself. There was a special
feeling that was calling him from afar, like if this voyage had all been
destined to be taken by him no matter what.
Across the wide majestic land where he lived, there lay many
cliffs and mountains. Most of them were
desolate due to their dangerous steep
dead ends or because they led to nowhere but waterfalls and rivers. Very few
villagers dared to take the adventure and excitement of exploring them. Thus, no
one really ever came back alive either as a matter of fact.
He didn’t mind that. The only thing that he wanted was to feel
power, excitement, or maybe a tingling sensation nobody’s ever felt before.
What reason was there to live, but to fulfill what curiosities life placed in
one’s life paths?
Now, talking about his adventure, he didn’t really
need many supplies to undertake it, just his simple waterskin and about a
week’s food stocks for personal survival.
When the day on which he was about to embark on his quest
came, he started by crossing the land’s limits and overpassing some broken
fences. Before going any further, he turned to give one last look at everything
he had known till now. As if a burdening feeling was telling him that he
wouldn’t return ever again...
The first kilometers that he covered by walking across a big
grassy prairie had been quite optimistic, yet after traveling for some hours
nonstop, he had reached Zurgia, the most
dangerous and desolate mountain everybody ever
knew. Moments later, he had found a small
cave-like opening facing the west. Besides it, a river flowed with such
calmness, leading maybe only to a small lake. The perfect place to take shelter
for the night.
He took out his survival belongings and went to fill his
waterskin at the nearby river. Afterward,
he took a deep breath and drank a gulp of water.
Wolves howled from the mountains’ tops. Beside their horizons,
a full Moon had appeared, radiating a light so strong it was hard for him to
keep his eyes open. His feet touched the still river’s surface as he sat down
to eat.
He began to notice his surroundings more deeply. As a matter
of fact, it was kind of awkward to see a river so still, moreover a so lifeless environment around him. Perhaps the
problem with how everyone felt didn’t just protrude from his village, but from
everywhere life predominated across the land. How strange…
As some following days passed by, he continued his voyage by
traveling and beginning to hike across Zurgia. It was indeed very steep, yet
mesmerizing to climb. His legs felt weaker as time went by, but strength and
determination were the key elements that finally let him reach the highest peak
of it all.
Nevertheless, when he had arrived, he was surprised to find a
dark lonely cave and a protruding giant waterfall making such a huge noise just
some meters above it. It was as if something or someone had been waiting for him
all along, yet that was impossible because he knew for sure nobody had reached
such heights before him. He had even found dead skulls and skeletons multiple
times along the way.
Was he alone after all? He couldn’t yet grasp at what distance
he had endeavored until this moment. The height that he had reached was
astonishingly great. If one were to look before the cliff’s end, nothing could
be seen below but a narrow opening formed with the two mountain’s curved walls,
only opening themselves to show a dim horizon
light far away.
His legs had grown so tiresome
after such a long climb that he couldn’t take it any longer. He fell with a thump
into a kneeling position, his fully grown beard almost managing to touch the
ground below him. Giant waterdrops flew from the waterfall and struck him in the face, producing a cold sensation that
made him feel a little bit dizzy. Overall, he felt weak.
There were some moments of pure calmness, where nothing but
the thundering sound of the waterfall and
his breathing could be detected. Yet, seconds
passed by before some growls could be faintly heard. He began to slowly crawl
back, pulling himself across the cave just before topping with a dead eagle some
meters beside him and the cave’s wall. The thing that growled was coming closer
from beyond, still indistinguishable in
itself.
He turned to look at the eagle, its wings still stretched open
while laying flat on the rocky surface. Its eyes were closed and its beak was facing
him with some scars on the very top. Scars similar to those he had on the back
of his arm… He began to move his back
upwards and then slowly lifted his head to face what darkness protruded before
him.
Suddenly, without any warning, the growling thing thrust upon him from nowhere and began to tackle all his body. The impulse made him plunge
himself backward, performing some backflips while quickly reaching the cliff’s
end with the thing still chasing him whilst being impossible to keep it a fair
distance away from himself. He then felt nothing below his feet. His
body shook a few moments, his eyes closed and
then opened seconds later, only to find himself flying towards the horizon.
Moreover, anywhere where he would feel unattached and separated from the thing
that forevermore never ceased to chase him at all.
Indeed he had fallen off the cliff, yet had never touched land again.
This is the tale of how the wind was created. Always wanting to run away from the chills that chased and came with
it, yet forevermore containing an eagle’s spirit, speed, and determination.
Nature embraced what feelings he brought along
whenever he flew across trees, or whenever he grazed any water’s currents. The
villagers discovered what it was like to feel the breeze throughout their
bodies and grasp what new ideas came into their minds after taking deep breaths
and letting their imaginations take control.
Indeed, the wind had brought what life and
excitement he had wanted and was essentially missing for Worgenous at the end.
